Quad Cities Rallies Past Dragons
DAYTON -- The Quad Cities River Bandits battled back from a 3-0 deficit to score six unanswered runs and defeat the Dayton Dragons 6-3 on Wednesday night. A crowd of 8,216 saw the game at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons led 3-0 after three innings and held a 3-2 lead going to the eighth before Quad Cities rallied to score four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead and go on to the win. Back-to-back two-run doubles by Ronnie Mitchell and Chase McDonald accounted for the River Bandits runs in the eighth.Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano worked the first five innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs, walking one and striking out five. Joel Bender replaced Romano to start the sixth and pitched scoreless baseball over his first two innings before running into problems in the eighth. He faced four batters and all eventually scored. Bender suffered the loss and fell to 4-2.The Dragons took the lead with two runs in the second inning. Phillip Ervin started the rally with a line drive hit to left field. Avain Rachal lifted a base hit to center, and when the ball skipped past James Ramsay, Ervin scored to make it 1-0 as Rachal went to second. Rachal then stole third and scored when the catcher's throw went into left field to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead. The Dragons scored again in the third when Jamodrick McGruder walked, stole second, went to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Quad Cities scored two unearned runs in the fourth, taking advantage of a costly two-out throwing error by McGruder from second base and then enjoyed the four-run eighth inning for the win.The Dragons finished with eight hits. Ervin, Rachal, and Carlton Daal each had two.The Dragons (14-17) host the River Bandits (16-15) again at Fifth Third Field on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Dan Langfield (2-1, 2.86) will start the game for the Dragons against Quad Cities' Chris Lee (5-5, 3.97).
