What are the Worst Intersections in Dayton?
DAYTON -- "This intersection can be pretty dangerous. I've seen a couple accidents happen right here and they have to shut down the whole intersection because there was no way around it," said Samantha Haas who lives near Smithville and Linden.
She says that intersection is one of the worst in town. "It's crowded. There's always cars here no matter what time of day. It's always hard to get out. Especially when you're coming out of the gas stations to pull into one of the intersections as well."
"Smithville and Linden experiences a lot because it's doubled up with the interstate on/off ramp right next to it," said Dayton Police Sgt. Aaron Fraley.
So what other intersections do police frequently visit?
"Germantown and Broadway is another rough intersection," said Fraley. "Gettysburg and Hoover is one of the rough intersections just because they're two busy streets but Gettysburg has primacy. It's five lanes wide and Hoover is three at that point. It's kind of a blind approach coming up because of the buildings."
"You really have to take a second look. The buildings are blocking your view so you really have to take a second look when you're turning because it's easy for someone to get into an accident," said Adam who works at the Yaki Hair shop on the corner.
Gettysburg and Hoover is one of the intersections with photo enforcement cameras. Dayton police say that is one of their best tools to keep the accidents down.
"People are going to still have accidents," said Adam.
"I know a lot of people complain about it and I know people say it's a hassle but I think it's one of the great things we can do to monitor the traffic here, not only for drivers but pedestrians also," said Eric Warren of Dayton.
"Keowee at Fifth and Keowee at Third have actually seen a marked decrease," said Fraley. "Third and Keowee used to be very bad and it's not as bad as it was. I attribute that to the photo enforcement cameras," said Fraley.
"This intersection has come along way," said Warren. "It used to be one of the most dangerous intersections in downtown Dayton and basically I see a lot of improvements here. With the ticket enforcement cameras to enforce drivers to make sure they do the right thing when they are on the road."
