Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy This Summer

DAYTON -- As the school year rounds to a close, many parents are still trying to figure out what to do with their kids. Megan Rickman has three kids, and knows she has to make sure they have summer plans before school gets out.

"I don't want them just sitting around all summer long," said Rickman. "They go from going to school and being so involved in academic activities and then to go and sit in the house on the couch and to get on the PlayStation, that's not good for them. They need to stay involved. It's very important.

"If parents are still looking for opportunities for the kids I would encourage getting on the phone sooner than later because time is running out," said United Way manager of community initiative Tracy Sibbing.

The United Way partners with several community organizations that host summer enrichment programs for your children.

"The Boys and Girls Club runs a summer program," said Sibbing. "The YMCA has 14, so no matter where you live there's a program near you."

But Besides, working, summer camps and reading clubs, an often looked over option is volunteering.

"My 15-year-old daughter is actually getting involved with the Humane Society," said Rickman. "We feel that's important to be involved in the community and keep those activities going."

Volunteering is a great resume builder for your child and can also be great building character.

"It's important for children to do things that are positive and meaningful and that can keep them out of trouble," said Sibbing. "It keeps them doing something positive for themselves in the community."

Some students will find their passion volunteering and in many cases can continue doing it even through the school year.

"During the school year we offer a lot of volunteer opportunities for kids especially those looking to fulfill their community service credits," said Boys and Girls Club director Natasha Spears. "They work with kids on homework, reading to them, etc..."
