City of Dayton Adding Surveillance Cameras in Public Places

DAYTON -- Surveillance cameras, you see them just about everywhere you go, and now they're going up in the City of Dayton as well.

"There's a clear crime prevention mission here but if we fail at that then the ability to solve crime," said Chief Richard Biehl, Dayton Police Department.

"I think it's a good tool, because it's actuality, you know caught, right in time, caught right there, you know you can't deny it," said Larry Perkins.

And you can't deny the three cameras that are already up on the corner of Third and Main Streets.

24 more will be put up in the central business area downtown.

"There's evidence to suggest particularly that cameras are effective in reducing property crime," said chief Biehl.

"Would the cameras make you feel safer?" asked the reporter, "For sure," said Perkins.

While cameras may help reduce crime in that area, some have concerns.

"It could move it to another location, and then you have to ask yourself, did that help?" said Larry Dudley.

Others are worried about their constitutional right to privacy, but Chief Biehl says it's not an issue.

"Open public space they're aren't privacy concerns in terms of constitutional protections there, it's called plain view from a legal perspective," said Chief Biehl, "So anything any citizen can see in public, we can see too."

The video from the cameras will be kept for up to two weeks.

That's so officers can review video if a crime takes place.

The cameras were paid for by the company who provided them, the city had to pay for some materials to use them,

We showed you back in February that the City of Englewood already uses similar technology.

They have 45 cameras set up around that city.

It was a 2-million dollar investment that was all paid for by grants.
