Moms Helping Kids with Cancer; Golf Outing Next Weekend
CENTERVILLE -- Every parent's nightmare is having a sick child with no way to help them feel better. For too many in the Miami Valley this is a reality, but some local moms have banded together to help ease the burden for some of these families.
Gabe and Addie have become fast friends, and it is not a love of golf that brought these two 8 year olds together. They have both had one heck of a fight with cancer.
"Just not the best year at all," said Gabe Duplechian.
Both he and Addie's Leukemia is now in remission. Gabe does not seem too worries about himself, instead he is thinking of the other kids he's met, like Addie, who have cancer.
"I hope they start feeling really good ... and be strong, yes."
"It's been a very hard year, so seeing him today is just inspiring for everyday coming after this, that he's tough, he's resilient and he's just so positive about everything," said his mother, Adrienne Duplechian, who knows this disease better than most. She works with cancer patients at Dayton Children's.
"Physical therapy now, all the time, treatment every month. I just wish we didn't have to do all this but we understand so much now and you know to get him to cancer free this is the road, we're not alone," said Duplechian.
Next week, on Yankee Trace Golf Course, people will be hitting the links just for kids like Gabe and Addie. Saturday's golf outing at Yankee Trace is followed by a derby dinner party with plenty of items up for auction. The money raised goes toward the Dayton Children's Needy Patient fund, and to little Emma's family. She's another young fighter who's right in the middle of her chemo treatments, and wasn't feeling well enough to chat today.
"You can't even imagine what somebody's going through. Just to be able to help them financially, because you just don't know how you're going to do it when you get those types of bills coming in," said Amy Brown, with Moms 4 Miracles.
The group of moms have made it all happen.
"We are so blessed that we have healthy children so I want to do everything I can to help others. And what's amazing to me is these families come to us and say we are so blessed to have met you, and I think to myself, no, no no, we're the one's who are blessed," said Kathy Hart Young who helped to get the group started.
These moms just want to help ease the burden so parents can focus on their kids getting healthy, and be able to just be kids.
You can still register to golf and there will be plenty of other items up for grabs at the derby party next Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Yankee Trace beginning at 11 a.m.
Items include a signed University of Dayton basketball with the signatures of this year's Elite 8 team, and the jersey of 1984 star, Ed Young. Those items start at $500, and you can even purchase them now, just e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
