Trotwood City Manager Says They Will Go the Distance to Save Target
TROTWOOD -- Trotwood's city manager is promising to do whatever it takes to keep the target in town.
With the protesters outside, and the shoppers inside, one Trotwood Target worker said the store hasn't been this busy since Black Friday.
"The community has really galvanized over the issue of this Target closure and you are seeing that demonstrated with the shoppers here today," said City Manager Michael J. Lucking.
Lucking is thrilled the message is getting out... Both on the dozens of petitions signed in person Saturday and the 2200 on Change.org for the page "Keep Target Store in Trotwood, Ohio Open."
"We intend to drop those off to the corporate management in Minneapolis to demonstrate the community support for this store," said Lucking. "We're going to deliver these petitions, whether they let us in their door or not, we are going to deliver these petitions."
The city also has the support of the Dayton NAACP.
"Every time they come to the city of Trotwood they say 'good visit, keep going. We will continue to support the schools,' but never gave them any clue that they were gonna close," said Derrick L. Foward, President Dayton Unit NAACP. Never told them we were on a downsize."
Target reps say the store is closing because it's not making the company any money, and they have not budged on the May 3rd closure date.
"More than devastated, I was really angry because they don't know us. They think we don't have any money to spend. Our pockets are full and we would spend the money," said a protester. "We've lost our stores. They've lost our business. We're not going to the other ones they have open."
"It's a financial loss and it's a spiritual loss as well. Certainly losing the payroll here affects the city resource," said Lucking. "I'm concerned about the ongoing appearance here after the store is closed. We've talked to Target about that and they've assured me they will do a good job of maintain the property and we''ll see where they go with that."
The owners of the Trotwood property say their intent is to market the property for sale. Trotwood City Council will meet this Tuesday to discuss improvements and redevelopment of the area.
