AAA Roadside Rescue Team Standing by Ready to Assist Drivers

MIAMI VALLEY -- As the latest snow storm approaches, AAA is standing by to assist drivers. If road conditions are icy, AAA is advising motorists to stay off the roads until road crews have treated the roads for ice and then not until conditions are favorable for the commute. Nearly one-quarter of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement, resulting in more than 1,300 deaths and 116,800 people injured annually, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

AAA offer these tips to drivers who choose to venture out:
See & be seen: clean all snow and ice from the entire vehicle
Always wear your seatbelt
Avoid distractions: dont talk on your cell phone
Keep a safe distance: If you are driving in wet or snowy conditions, give yourself at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
Brake gently: to avoid skidding, and use low gears to avoid losing traction. Gentle pressure on the accelerator pedal when starting is best method for retaining traction and avoiding skids.  If your wheels start to spin, let up on the accelerator until traction returns.
Avoid passing plows: unless necessary
When driving on the highway, stay out of the pack: This is especially important when driving during times of heavy snow causing limited visibility. AAA Public Affairs Manager, Cindy Antrican, says Stay out of packs, stay alert, look around and leave yourself an out. Your goal is to be proactive, rather than reactive.
Use major routes: that have been cleared or salted whenever possible
Do not engage your vehicles cruise control: Using cruise control on wet roads or during heavy rain can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Keep your headlights on
If you are involved in an accident, either stay in your vehicle, or get well away from where the traffic is approaching

What to do if you are in a crash:
During times of severe weather, such as the approaching snow storm, it may be difficult for police officers to respond to car crashes. When police cannot respond to a crash AAA Insurance recommends drivers do the following:
First be safe, has anyone been injured?
Of course you want to exchange contact and insurance information, but if possible, use technology to assist. As the saying goes, a picture says a thousand words. Use the camera on a smart phone to capture images of the other party's driver license, proof of insurance card, license plate and damage to the vehicles.
When possible call the police department and report the accident.
Call your insurance company and make them aware you were involved in an accident. To prepare for the phone call, sketch a diagram of the accident. This will aid in your describing the sequence of events to the claims representative.

What to carry with you:
Carry an emergency kit equipped for winter weather. The kit should include:
Mobile phone, pre-programmed with rescue apps and important phone numbers including family and emergency services, and car charger.
Drinking water
First-aid kit
Non-perishable snacks for both human & pet passengers
Bag of abrasive material (sand-salt-cat litter) or traction mats
Snow shovel
Extra warm clothing (gloves, hats, scarves)
Flashlight with extra batteries
Window washer solvent
Ice scraper with brush
Cloth or roll of paper towels
Jumper cables
Warning devices (flares or triangles)
Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)
