Changes Proposed for School Calamity Days
DAYTON -- Local school districts are running out of days they can cancel class.
Now the state of Ohio is stepping in to try to help districts who are in a crunch about how to handle calamity days.
"It's just too cold for kids to be out," Huber Heights resident Drew Wiley said.
"I think the kids should stay inside on days like this, especially tomorrow," North Dayton resident Ronnie Miles added.
Extreme winter weather continues to hit the Miami Valley, with wind chills dropping again below zero degrees.
As the snow piles up so are the calamity days for a lot of districts in the Miami Valley.
Gov. John Kasich has asked the Ohio General Assembly and the State Department of Education to give schools a one-time increase in the number of useable calamity days.
"I think the state should work with the kids because it's not their fault that mother nature is taking effect to them," said Riley.
Legislators are proposing to add four calamity days, bringing the total to nine. But that still poses a problem in Huber Heights
"We already are making up days 6, 7, and 8, currently they're scheduled for June," District Superintendent Susan Gunnell said after a school board meeting Monday.
Canceling classes again would mean they're again maxed out of calamity days, considering the state's initiative is passed.
Now Huber Heights is asking the state for three "Blizzard Bag" days.
They allow students to learn online during a weather-related day away from the classroom.
"The window kind of opened for districts to do this again because of the unusual weather that we've had," said Gunnell. "If a student does not have access to a computer at home, when the student returns to school, the buildings will have copies available in turn and children will be given that packet and be provided 10 days in order to complete those lessons."
Huber Heights is waiting to hear the decision on their Blizzard Bag proposal.
The Ohio Assembly will likely hear the state proposal in an education committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
