High Heating Bills Worry Local Business
CENTERVILLE -- We've had several viewers contact us saying their heating bills have doubled and in some cases tripled.
Some are having a hard time paying their bills, and it's affecting one local business.
"It's almost three times the normal bill," said Sham Reddy, owner of Heritage Cleaners in Centerville.
Reddy works in his dry cleaner business he's owned for 21 years.
"The business is already slow for the last couple years we're already struggling to survive and this doesn't make it easy on us," said Reddy.
He's talking about this DP&L bill he just got in the mail.
"It was running somewhere around $150 to $170 range and then it jumped up to $312 last month, last bill and this month is $601," he said.
Reddy says he already follows some of DP&L's tips for conserving.
"We set the thermostat probably around 65 degrees and we just keep the front warmer with a small space heater," said Reddy.
Heating accounts for nearly 50 percent of your energy usage.
If you go higher than 68 degrees, DP&L says it can add 3 percent to the amount of energy needed for heating.
"My usage was double," he said. "I don't know how it could be the only difference would be the heat."
Reddy also turns out all the lights when the shop closes, and only two emergency lights stay on.
And with business being slow the past two months, he's not sure how he'll pay his bill.
"On a residential they will make payment arrangements," he said. "On commercial they won't give you any leeway at all, they just want it done."
So no matter what, he's stuck.
"I got to pay it, there's no question about it," Reddy said, "And if you don't are you at risk of being turned off?" asked the reporter. "Absolutely, and everything here is electric there's no gas here."
