AAA Road Crews Busy, Cold Temps Pose More Trouble
DAYTON -- With the mercury taking a plunge, crews with AAA are gearing up for a long week.
"It's as far as it will go ... the engine won't turn," said Devora Johnson, whose car just would not crank.
"It grunted like it wanted to start but it wouldn't do anything else, so I'm trapped," Johnson said.
She called AAA, a call center that saw a 40 percent increase in calls this weekend, many of them for dead batteries and slide-offs, especially Sunday night.
"We have more trucks out than average to help with the volume, so it's a constant focus, it's like going into the playoffs getting ready for the Super Bowl for us, that's the whole time of the year for winter," said Chris Overpeck, the AAA Dayton-area fleet supervisor.
Dispatchers sent a crew to Devora's home.
"It's very reliable, I have no problem with it," Devora said, referring to her car. But it doesn't matter how new or well maintained your car may be. Batteries only last three to five years in this climate.
"It's weak already from the age, but then when it gets really cold it gets even weaker," said Shawn Cobble, a AAA roadside assistance worker, who has been going non-stop.
"When everybody says you know, get your car ready for winter, a lot of people don't listen, they don't have your batteries checked, then they end up waiting on us to take a couple hours to get there so, right because we get so backed up with calls," said Cobble.
If you do get stranded it would help if your trunk was full of things like gloves, shovels, an emergency road kit, a blanket to name a few. Anything to keep warm and safe until help arrives.
With the temperature dropping in the coming days, it's bad news for tires. For every 10 degrees the mercury dips, tires lose one to two pounds of tire pressure, so be sure they are properly inflated.
Even though Devora's errands have had to wait, she is looking at the bright side.
"I'm just glad I didn't get out, you know, and get stranded on the street. It's very good it happened in the garage here because I could have been out," Devora said.
