Possible Smoking Ban In Cars With Kids
MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- An Ohio lawmaker wants to take the smoking ban to the streets, making it illegal to smoke in your car if little kids are inside.
State Senator Charleta Tavares (D-Columbus) is proposing a ban on smoking in your own car if there are children under the age of six inside. A handful of other states have enacted similar laws, now Ohio could be next.
Ohio has been cracking down on lighting up for years. Smoking is already banned from all Buckeye State workplaces including inside restaurants and bars. Now one lawmaker wants to take it a step further, making it illegal to smoke in your own car with young children.
"A kid doesn't really have a choice whether or not his parents are going to smoke," said Michael Ross of Beavercreek.
"It's bad, bad for the kids. Secondhand smoke, you hear a lot of stuff about it," agreed Dewayne Wilburn of Franklin.
In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children exposed to secondhand smoke are more susceptible to:
-frequent and severe asthma attacks
-bronchitis and pneumonia
-and sudden infant death syndrome
The CDC also reports secondhand smoke is responsible for up to 15,000 hospitalizations annually in children 18 months old or younger.
That's probably why most people we talked to support a statewide ban on smoking in your car with children under the age of six years old
"Smoking is terrible for you. It causes all sorts of health problems that kids get later on like asthma, so I'm ok with that," said Mary Benedetto of Dayton.
Still some believe the ban, is a little too "Big Brother."
"That's the thing I don't agree with. It's kind of controlling what you do in your own car," James Boyigton of Dayton said.
"They're trying to protect your kids. What you do is your business but your kid can't really help it," said Nikki Watkins of Franklin.
The bill is still in committee right now. If passed, violators would be fined $500 the first time they're busted and $250 each time after that.
