Beavercreek: Soliciting Door-to-Door Proposal
GREENE COUNTY -- Beavercreek may be the next city in line to implement stricter regulations on those soliciting door to door.
At Monday night's work session the city council discussed the proposed ordinance for the first time, as a result of people complaining to their council members about constant unwanted visitors.
The preliminary draft states that any person or group selling items door to door must get a license from the city and with that a list of houses they are forbidden to go to.
"If you're going to go out and sell items door to door you look on the website and it will say here's our regulations and you need to get a copy of the list. Similar to the do not call list," Beavercreek Law Director Steve McHugh said Monday.
Not everyone will have to get a copy of that list. Anyone going door to door for religious, charitable or political reasons and not selling anything are free to knock.
Fundraising doesn't fit that criteria, however.
"I know for me I'd like to know how other cities handle kids. You're all getting cookies for Christmas because I bought them from the band and soccer," Beavercreek Mayor Vicki Giambrone said.
When we hit the streets we got mixed reactions.
"I have people coming to the door and want to paint my number on my sidewalk. I don't have a problem with that. A guy's trying to make 10 bucks. Times are hard. I don't have an issue," Paul King of Beavercreek explained.
"You don't want it to look like you're not friendly but if they're trying to sell something it can get a little annoying," Beavercreek's Ashley Brenneman added.
To be on the 'do not solicit' list you would have to pay a fee. The amount is still up for discussion.
The council will write down their own requirements and they will brainstorm at the next work session.
