UPDATE: Springfield Man Accused in Amber Alert in Court
UPDATE -- The man accused of trying to run away with a 14-year-old Springfield girl, sparking an Amber Alert, has been indicted.
Mark Edwards, 43, is now charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and interfering with custody. Police say the teen willingly ran away with Edwards last month, but 90 minutes later, officers found them in a wooded area off Troy Road in German Township.
CLARK COUNTY -- Springfield Police say a 14-year-old girl left for the school bus this morning and when her mother discovered she hadn't made it on the bus, she called police.
"I told her wait here for me so we can get everything ready so I can walk down there with her because we're not allowed to keep her out of our sight. So it's 6:45 and I'm coming down here thinking that she's waiting but she's gone," said the victim's brother.
We won't reveal the identity of the 14 year old victim but her brother who will also remain anonymous says a couple months ago they started getting suspicious that Mark Edwards, 43, was having inappropriate relations with the young girl, both at their home and Edwards house.
"My whole family had suspicions about this guy and if we had just did something and stepped in and told her not to go over there anymore and kept her away from him I think it wouldn't have escalated to this point," the brother said.
That point was reached when the two willingly ran away together. Once the family noticed she was gone, they called police.
Right behind the girl's apartment complex is a wooded area. Her family thought that she may be back there with Edwards. It turns out they were right.
"She was back there with him. They got in the car after they saw me bust out there," said the brother. "I started chasing after the car holding onto the car, hitting the driver's window, telling him to stop. I want my sister back. He didn't stop you just sped up."
Police then pulled the man over, found the juvenile hiding under a blanket in the back seat and arrested Edwards.
"They had camping material, toilet paper, food, it looked like they would be gone for some time," said Sheriff Gene Kelly.
Along with miscellaneous weapons and survival gear was a note from the girl to her mother saying they would run off together.
"What they have is wrong. I understand if this is a 15-year-old she ran away with him, that I would understand. A 43-year-old, no, there's something not right in his head," said the brother.
According to the girl's brother, the family found out a couple months ago about the relationship between the man and girl, but they suspect they had been seeing each other for about two years and that she claimed to love him.
Edwards had been charged in April with sexual conduct involving a minor.
Edwards is now in the Clark County Jail and the girl has been released to her family.
Police also say they showed up on Wednesday at Edwards' house with a warrant for three counts of sexual conduct with the minor, after looking into the family's suspicions, but he was not home at the time.
Edwards is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.
