New Types of Flu Vaccines Available This Year
UPDATE: DAYTON--It's that time of the year to get your flu shot. This season there are more options, including a brand new shot that promises more protection.
"Everyone should get a flu shot." Dr. Thomas Herchline said. He is the Medical Director for Public Health in Dayton and Montgomery County. Dr. Herchline said the quadrivalent shot will guard you against four strains of the flu, instead of three.
"So it should be more effective, and more likely to cover what circulates in the community." He said.
Allergic to eggs? Doctors said there is now a brand new flu shot that is egg free.
Dr. Herchline said the traditional flu shot is made from viruses grown in eggs, and usually isn't a problem unless someone has an egg allergy.
He said many people in the past haven't gotten the shot, for fear they may get an allergic reaction.
"They use that as a reason to not get the vaccine so they should feel very comfortable about getting the new vaccine."
MIAMI VALLEY -- New types of vaccines will be available this flu season, which will be beneficial for a variety of reasons.
The most popular new vaccine is an egg-free shot for those allergic to eggs. The other is a vaccine that will offer protection from four strains of flu.
Doctors, however, said they are expecting to be in short supply of the new vaccines because they're new, so patients should inquire about them now and even call ahead and order the shot from your doctor.
Health officials say the traditional flu shot will still be available and there should be enough supply this year.
Public Health-Dayton & Montgomery County health clinics, which will offer flu vaccines, begin in October. The Greene County Combined Health District offers shots on certain days at their office in Xenia. Also, some pharmacies and doctors' offices are now offering flu shots.
