Pedestrians Dance With Danger Across Springboro Pike
MIAMI TWP. -- Getting to the Dayton Mall is becoming hazardous, after the Ohio Department of Transportation removed a traffic light at a popular intersection for pedestrians.
The light at Springboro Pike and Prestige Place that allowed drivers to turn left into the mall, was removed a few months ago.
We caught it on camera, people playing a game of Russian roulette for a shopping trip to the mall.
"Everything from just young adults to adults with children just trying to get across the road and back and forth," said David Kliaber, owner of Blue Byrd Tattoo.
"We used to have the traffic light back there that was helping people pass over, but now it's more of a hassle. People have to stop and go between five lanes, it's very dangerous," said Mohamed Redha, owner of Gyro Palace.
ODOT removed the red light to help traffic flow.
The RTA moved the bus stop that was on Prestige to down the road, just a few feet from a crosswalk.
"They're not really perceiving that as close enough for them," said Kliaber. "They're just going to cross the street and get to where they're wanting to go."
Local business owners, like Kliaber and Redha, watch people dance with danger everyday, and want something done.
"Sooner or later it's going to happen," said Redha. "And when they redid this street, I don't know what they were thinking by not putting in any crosswalks for pedestrians to crossover."
"Local law enforcement is going to have to find a way to address the issue," said Kliaber. "I don't want to see anybody get hurt, cost of life or injury or property, they should address it, that's what we pay taxes for."
We also called the Miami Township Police Department to see what they're doing to stop people from crossing the street illegally. We have yet to hear back.
