Beavercreek Council Delays New Bus Stop Applications
BEAVERCREEK -- It was a packed house inside Beavercreek City Council Chambers during Monday night's meeting.
Both sides of the RTA bus stop issue once again spoke their minds.
"This is 2013, time for the persons of color to be homogenized and be able to have access just like anyone else," said the Rev. Bruce, LEAD President.
"I feel it's frustrating that we're being called racist because I don't view this as a race issue," said Cathy Bryan, a Beavercreek resident. "Some see it as an economic issue, I see it as a parenting issue."
The issue is about building three bus stops in the area of the Mall at Fairfield Commons.
Right now, the closest stop is a mile-and-a-half away.
"It doesn't have any pedestrian sidewalks and it's an on and off ramp for the highway," said Meredith Baird, a Greene County resident. "I see people frequently walking to the bus stops there and it's a wonder someone hasn't gotten hit yet."
The debate on building the RTA bus stops has raged on for more than two years.
But Monday, Beavercreek City Council voted to move forward with the three stops requested by the Federal Highway Administration, but approved a six-month delay on all new applications on any additional bus stops.
"I want things done decent and in order" said the Rev. Bruce. "After two-and-a-half years I think we've had enough decent time, enough order time now it's time to have some construction time."
In June, the city was given 90 days by the Feds to re-hear the application for the three bus stops.
They could choose not to build them, but would lose federal highway financial assistance.
"They've tied this to highway funds and as a community we can't necessarily afford to pass up those funds," said Bryan.
Even if they would choose to lose the funding, some say they'll still fight for bus stops.
"LEAD will be around until Beavercreek puts three bus stops in Beavercreek" said Bruce. "They're not going to get rid of us."
City leaders say they've met three of the four requirements from the feds.
The fourth will be met when they re-hear the application for those three bus stops.
That is expected to happen next month.
