Truck Drivers Talk About Dangers on the Road

PIQUA -- Driving semi trucks can be a dangerous job, especially when they are driving through construction zones.

Truck drivers we spoke to say it's also dangerous because they're carrying up to an 80,000 pound load.

"Try to be safe because on the road you are not alone," said Raschid, a truck driver. "There are other guys driving."

Raschid is from Detroit and drives across the country and is in Ohio often.

"They say in Detroit you have two seasons, winter season and construction season," he said.

He's no stranger to the orange barrels like the ones in Downtown Dayton and knows the risk he takes every time he enters a construction zone.

"Drive safely, take your time, don't worry about the time and rush," said Raschid. "You're going to arrive 15 minutes late, better than never arriving."

Tim Kovich knows he needs to protect himself while he's on the road.

"You gotta watch out constantly, look way ahead," said Kovich. "And then watch your mirrors all the time for motorcycles and everything that cut around you."

He's been driving six days a week for nearly 20 years and seeing orange is just part of the job, that can turn dangerous.

"We can't stop fast enough and when we get into construction zones the cars as soon as there's an opening they cut you off and you lose your space, the stopping space," said Kovich.

And that space can be the difference between life or death.

"It's just a split second and you got somebody, or they got you," said Kovich.

It might seem like common sense, but slowing down when you're driving through a construction zone can help.

Also, try not to slam on the brakes or cut off a semi.
