Heat Warnings Issued, Cooling Centers Opened

MIAMI VALLEY -- Health departments around the Miami Valley have issued heat warnings, which are prompting governments to activate their emergency plans, including cooling centers.

The City of Dayton has designated its recreation centers as “cooling centers” during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.):
• Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W. Third St.
• Lohrey Recreation Center and Belmont Pool, 2366 Glenarm Ave.
• Northwest Recreation Center, 1600 Princeton Dr.

In addition, the City of Dayton is extending the hours of operation at the Fairview outdoor swimming pool (2262 Elsmere Avenue) through Saturday, July 20. Through Saturday, the pool will remain open until 7:30 p.m.

Residents can also beat the heat at one of the City of Dayton’s seven spray parks from 9 a.m.-dusk:
• Fairview Spray Park; 2262 Elsmere Avenue
• Five Oaks Spray Park; 329 Five Oaks Avenue
• Mallory Spray Park; 3037 Germantown Street
• McIntosh Spray Park; 882 W. Riverview Avenue
• Stuart Patterson Spray Park; 238 Baltimore Street
• Walnut Hills Spray Park; 2340 Wayne Avenue
• Washington Spray Park; 3620 E. Second Street

Cooling stations are being provided as respite from the heat and humidity. The following businesses and governmental entities have agreed to open their doors for this purpose during regular hours of operation:
• Meijer, 1500 Hillcrest Avenue, Springfield
• Upper Valley Mall, 1475 Upper Valley Pike, Springfield
• Walmart, 2100 N. Bechtle Avenue, Springfield
• Walmart, 200 Tuttle Road, Springfield
• Clark County Public Library System
  - Main Branch, 201 S. Fountain Ave, Springfield
  - Southern Village Shopping Center,  1123 Sunset Ave, Springfield
  - Park Shopping Center, 1119 N. Bechtle Ave, Springfield
  - Houston Branch, 5 W. Jamestown St., South Charleston
  - Enon Branch, 209 E. Main Street, Enon
• Bethel Twp. Fire Station, 3333 Lake Road, Medway  (open 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

Forecasts are calling for a stretch of at least three days with daytime heat indices at least 100 degrees, coupled with nighttime lows in excess of 70 degrees. According to the Clark county Combined Health District, these types of conditions will place individuals at a significantly increased risk for heat-related illnesses if they do not use necessary precautions.

CCCHD is asking everyone to check on family, friends and neighbors, especially those at high risk for heat related illness such as the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions.

CCCHD recommends that everyone pay particular attention to the following suggestions to prevent heat-related illness:
• Do not leave children and pets unattended in vehicles.
• Water is the best choice.  Alcohol beverages are not recommended, since drinking them may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
• Decrease physical activity. Exercise activities should occur in the morning or in the evening. Stay in the shade as much as possible.
• Use air conditioning, if available.
• Wear loose lightweight and light-colored cotton clothing.
• Eat light meals.
