Mother Faces Murder Charge After Toddler Dies

DAYTON -- A mother accused of abusing her own son has now been charged with murder.

Crystal Laurel had just been facing involuntary manslaughter; but now, the prosecutor says it was voluntary.

Taakota Hasty, 9-months-old, showed up at Children's Medical Center back in April, clinging to life, with bruises and burn marks covered by makeup.

Police say Laurel and her boyfriend beat him repeatedly.

UPDATE: Charges Approved in Death of Abused Toddler

DAYTON -- A mother and her boyfriend have been officially charged in the death of  19 month old Takota Hasty.

Crystal Laurel and Dustin Rybak were charged Tueday with involuntary manslaughter, child endangering and tampering with evidence.

Laurel received an additional charge of permitting child abuse.

Involuntary manslaughter, a first degree felony,  carries a 3 to 11 year sentence if convicted.

19 month old Takota Hasty was taken off life support late Monday after police say he was seriously beaten.

Laurel and Rybak brought the child to Children's Medical Center on Sunday.

Takota Hasty's family has set up a memorial fund to help pay for funeral costs.  You can donate at any Fifth-Third Bank to the Takota Hasty Memorial Fund.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- About 100 people gathered Monday evening outside Dayton Children's Medical Center for a toddler who was taken off life support earlier in the day.

The vigil included candles and balloons to say a prayer for 19-month-old Takota Hasty.

"It just, it just tears me apart. Knowing he probably wanted me, his Dad, to help him and I couldn't be there," said Justin Hasty who is living every parent's nightmare.

Takota was beaten so badly, he had survived only by life support until doctors told the family he was brain dead.

At 4:41 he was pronounced dead.

"They are really monsters, I mean they burned all over him. They burned on him and there are bruises from head to toe. I know he was screaming and he wanted help but he couldn't get it," said Hasty.

The boy's Mom, Crystal Laurel, and her boyfriend, Dustin Rybak, are both accused of abusing the toddler, and are now facing charges in connection to his death.

"They tourtured that poor little kid, they tortured him," Hasty said.
Hasty called Police on Easter Sunday over his other little boy, a 4 year old. He brought him to be treated at Dayton Children's.

Montgomery County Children Services opened a case against the mother, but over the past week police were unable to locate her and she wasn't answering phone calls.

The next time anyone heard from Laurel was Sunday when she and Rybak showed up at Children's with little Takota, who wasn't breathing. Rybak describes himself as a "self-employed street pharmacist." He's on probation for heroin possession.

Takota's family's hearts are broken.

"I would never dream that they would do this to an innocent little kid, ever ... never, I mean he was such a sweet kid," said Hasty.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- Justin Hasty's had no sleep and is barely holding himself together. His 19 month old Takota was barely hanging on, and at 4:40 hospital crews took the baby off of life support.

The Mom, Crystal Laurel and her boyfriend Dustin Rybak are both accused of the abuse... her for permitting it and endangering her child. He's staring at felonious assault. Now prosecutors will discuss charged related to the death.

RAW NEWS: Father Speaks Out About Son's Injuries From Suspected Child Abuse

Investigators say the Mom and boyfriend brought Takota to the emergency room early Sunday morning. His injuries were so apparent that it was abuse that hospital officials immediately called the Montgomery County Sheriff's office.

Tonight at 6 hear from the Dad on the warning signs and what Children Services has to say about the Mom's history.

Our Jackie Couture will have a live report at 6:00 on ABC 22 and at 6:30 on Fox 45.
