Trotwood parents, police react to child rape case

Travis Odom, 22, is suspected of raping an 11-year-old girl in Trotwood.

TROTWOOD (WRGT) -- Imagine checking on your child only to find a half-naked man in the closet.

It happened to a Trotwood mom.

Now police need your help to find the rape suspect.

"This is a predator. This is a child sexual predator that we really want to find and get him off the streets," Trotwood Police Deputy Chief John Porter said.

Deputy Chief Porter is talking about 22-year-old Travis Odom. He's accused of raping an 11-year-old girl.

The mother says she found Odom half-naked and hiding in a closet.

"This is a gentleman that preys upon young girls. We believe that they met along Facebook lines," said Deputy Chief Porter.

Porter spoke about the role social media plays in cases such as these.

"Younger kids now are having access to the social media and that is becoming a very dangerous link to some of these predators," said Deputy Chief Porter.

"They see kids online. They think they're easy victims," said a Trotwood father, who asked to remain anonymous.

This dad didn't want to show his face, but he's an active father in both his sons' lives.

"I try to keep my son off the Internet as much as possible. He has no social media accounts and no cell phone," said the father.

"You can never be too protective as a parent, especially when it comes to the safety of your children," said Tyler Steward, a concerned father.

Steward, a father of two, helps his mother in the yard.

Tammie Maiden is concerned about her children when she hears these kinds of stories.

"As a mom, I would have been very scared for my child," Maiden said.

Maiden made sure her son was ready for technology.

"When they're at least old enough to understand the risks that is involved with social media," said Maiden.

She hopes police can bring Odom to justice.

"He deserves to be punished," said Maiden. "He took advantage of her mentality and her age."

Odom now faces a charge of rape with a child under the age of 13.

If you know where he is call Crime Stoppers at 937-222-7867 (222-STOP).
