1 killed, 1 taken by Careflight after being hit by car in Clark County
CLARK COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - One person is dead and another taken by Careflight after they were hit this morning along a rural road in Clark County.
Sgt. Merrill Thompson with the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says the crash happened after a driver's car broke down on Old Springfield Road. Sgt. Thompson said it was dark when the driver's car broke down, the driver called family to help them out.
Family members came to help and parked their car nose to nose with the original car. The car couldn't be jumped and Sgt. Thompson said they pushed the broken down car off the road. As they were gathering items up and putting them in the family members' car, another car came over a hill on Old Springfield Road and swerved to try and miss the car and hit two people standing outside.
One person died at the scene and another was taken by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital. The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified the woman killed as Dena Portis, 32 of Springfield. An autopsy of Portis is pending at this time. 19-year-old Ta’Vaughn Tilley identified as the person transported by Careflight, and is listed in 'fair' condition at Miami Valley Hospital.
Sgt. Thompson said the driver who hit the pedestrians has been questioned by investigators and lives nearby the crash scene. Thompson said it's too early to say if there will be citations as a result of the crash.
Authorities say anyone who may be out on the side of the road should have a flashlight with them or have reflective clothing on.
