UD head coach Anthony Grant to coach for USA Basketball
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—University of Dayton men's basketball coach Anthony Grant will be an assistant coach this summer for USA Basketball's entry in the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men which will be held June 11-17 in St. Catherines, Ontario.
Kansas' Hall of Fame coach Bill Self will be the team's head coach. Joining Grant as an assistant will be Danny Manning of Wake Forest.
Training camp for the U18 National Team will be conducted from May 31-June 2 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. After the team is selected, they will continue training in Colorado Springs until departing for the 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Championship June 8.
Athletes eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens who are 18 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 2000).
"It is truly an honor to represent our country as a member of the USA Basketball U18 coaching staff," Grant said. "I look forward to working with coach Self and coach Manning and preparing our young men to qualify for next year's U19 World Cup."
This is Grant's second stint with USA Basketball. He was an assistant for the 2008 USA Men's U18 National Team, which played in the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.
Grant is the fourth Flyer coach to serve with USA Basketball. Don Donoher had two stints, most notably as an assistant on the gold medal-winning team at the 1984 Olympics. Oliver Purnell served five times, including at the 2004 Olympics and winning the gold as head coach at the 1999 World University Games. Archie Miller wan assistant when the U.S. won the gold at the 2014 FIBA U19 World Championships.
