Dayton stays unbeaten in A-10 with win over GW


DAYTON (UD Athletics) – The University of Dayton's women basketball team won its eighth game in a row, holding on to the top spot of the Atlantic 10 standings with a 66-55 victory over George Washington.

The Flyers (14-4, 7-0 A-10) stay undefeated in conference games while the Colonials (8-10, 3-3 A-10) suffered their third conference loss.


4th quarter – 5:15 minutes left – Junior Lauren Cannatelli made her fourth three-point field goal of the game to extend Dayton's lead to 12, but a strong defensive effort helped secure the victory for the Flyers.


1ST Quarter: Dayton 23, George Washington 14

Cannatelli opened the game with back-to-back three pointers.

The first nine points came from three pointers by Cannatelli and Sophomore Jayla Scaife.

At the first media timeout (4:53), Dayton led George Washington 13-5.

Dayton went on a 7-0 run over 3:27 thanks to a strong defensive stand.

15 of the Flyers' 23 points came from behind the arch.

2nd Quarter: Dayton 36, George Washington 34

With 8:34 on the clock, George Washington cut Dayton's lead to two, with a score of 23-21.

Senior Jenna Burdette ended Dayton's scoring drought with a three pointer with 4:15 left.

At the media timeout (3:38), Dayton maintained its lead with a score of 28-24.

Dayton went on a 9-0 run over 4:18 minutes.

Burdette led the Flyers with 12 points and three assists at the half.

3rd Quarter: Dayton 52, George Washington 45

George Washington took its first lead of the game with 8:03 in the quarter, 39-36.

Redshirt senior Alex Harris scored four straight points to give the Flyers a 41-39 lead.

At the media timeout (4:15), Dayton led George Washington 43-41.

The Flyers went on a 6-0 run over 1:41 minutes.

Dayton's defense held George Washington to a scoring drought of over two minutes, holding the Colonials 0-6 from the field.

Dayton extended its lead to nine, forcing a George Washington timeout with 1:13 left in the quarter.

4th Quarter: Dayton 66, George Washington 55

The Flyers extended their lead with a score of 61-49 thanks to Cannatelli's fourth three with 5:15 left in the game.

Dayton's defensive effort held George Washington to only 10 points in the final quarter.

Cannatelli, Burdette, and Scaife all scored in double figures to lead the Flyers to victory.

Senior Javonna Layfield led all players in rebounding with 11.

23-7 – Dayton benefited from a 23-7 fast break points advantage.


36-29 – The Flyers outrebounded the Colonials 36 to 29, allowing for fast break and second chance opportunities.


The Flyers will travel to Richmond, Va. on Wednesday, January 24 at 7 p.m. to take on the Richmond Spiders.
