DARKE COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Get ready for a canine competition like you’ve never seen before. This Saturday, Extreme Insanity Dog Sports is hosting a flyball tournament at the Darke County Fairgrounds.

“It’s like drag racing dogs,” Extreme Insanity Dog Sports president Russell Rex said. “Just like you would see at a drag strip course, the lights will come down. Yellow, yellow, yellow, green. That’s how this race starts.”

In flyball, a team of four dogs will take on another team of four dogs in relay-style racing. Four or five heats will determine the race, and whoever has the best time in completing the course correctly wins.

“I heard about the sport back in ’99, watching it on TV, and decided this is the sport for me,” Rex said. He spends about one year training each dog.

“The course length is 51 feet from the starting line to the actual box,” Rex said. “Inside the box is a tennis ball in a spring-loaded mechanism. When the dog hits it, the spring-loaded mechanism will fire the ball, the dog will then return back, and then the next dog can go and so on until all four dogs finish the race.”

The tournament is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Darke County Fairgrounds Coliseum.
