DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - Dayton Police said a man was running from crews in the area of Free Pike when he dropped a 7 week old he was carrying, and that infant fell to the ground, hitting a metal pipe.
Police reportedly tried to stop the vehicle on Salem Avenue, but it took off from them. They had tried to stop the vehicle two times over the past 10 days and said the suspect had a history of being involved in drug and gun crimes, so multiple crews started chasing the driver. After 22 minutes, an officer deployed a tire deflation device, and the suspect jumped out of the vehicle on Merryfield Avenue.
He was carrying the infant when he took off, and when he tried to jump a fence behind an address on Free Pike, he dropped the baby. That infant was taken to Dayton Children's Hospital for treatment, and, at last check, was in stable condition.
The suspect, Alvin Thompson, was taken into custody, and was found to have a semi-automatic weapon on him. He's currently in the Montgomery County Jail on preliminary charges.
