TROY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT)- Police have arrested a man accused of stealing a car that was left running in a Troy parking lot, with a 2-year-old boy was inside.
James Michael Hatmaker, 42, of Dayton now faces charges of Grand Theft Auto and Kidnapping. He was arraigned in Miami County Municipal court on Monday morning and a judge set his bond at $55,000.
The carjacking happened in early December outside a BP gas station on Archer Drive. The toddler's mother left him inside the running car while she went into the store. Surveillance video shows her walking into the store and coming out, on her phone, realizing her car was gone. "I parked right outside the door," she told the 911 operator, "I ran in to get cigarettes and then my car was gone."
Police were called by a man about 15 minutes after the car was stolen. He told dispatchers his wife's car was stolen, "My wife went out to start her car, there's a car in my driveway with a baby in it, and her car's gone."
Hatmaker's preliminary hearing has been set for February 19.
