GEICO Skytypers pilot dies in crash

FARMINGDALE, NY (WKEF/WRGT) - A pilot with the GEICO Skytypers Air Show team has died in a crash in New York.

Ken Johansen crashed shortly after takeoff Wednesday from Republic Airport and was killed, no one else was injured. FOX45's Clancy Burke rode along with Johansen before last year's Vectren Dayton Air Show.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a commander in the U.S. Navy. He was also a commercial airline pilot. According to the GEICO Skytpers, he was part of the air show team for more than a decade.

Johansen leaves behind his wife and two children, "Ken was loved and admired by many in the aviation community, his family and friends, as well as those in his hometown of Doylestown, PA. Our hearts are broken as we mourn his passing," the team said in a statement.
