Dayton Public Schools Gets D's & F's in 2013 Report Card
DAYTON -- Superintendent Lori Ward is the first to admit, "We definitely have a lot of work to do in Dayton public schools."
The district met 2 out of the possible 24 standards last year and ranked near the bottom of the 16 districts in Montgomery County. Ward says the hardest numbers to swallow were the percentage of 3rd graders at or above proficient math and reading levels.
"Third-grade reading was a huge challenge for us that percentage was not as high as I thought it would be," she said.
Besides improving the reading levels Dayton Public Schools has two other major areas of emphasis.
1) Closing the achievement gap: making sure every student can succeed regardless of their socioeconomic or racial background.
2) Making sure every student that graduates is ready for college and career opportunities. We asked superintendent Lori Ward how she plans to make this happen.
The number one element that will move numbers is high quality teachers," she said. "We replaced or relocated 11 of our principles. We have really been selective and our teacher hiring practices.
We showed these grades to local parents.
"This is the worst," said parent Amira Yousif. "They didn't get C's and they didn't get B's.
Yousif agrees it starts with the teachers, but say it ends with the parents.
"Parents have a big role in the education," Yousif said. "If they work together they can have more progress for the kids."
"I would ask tough questions as a parent," said Ward. "I would ask does my child have the best teachers and am I doing my part?"

Ward says their graduation rate has been climbing for the last three years by more than 10% and their performance index has remained the same for the past three years.
