Dragons Win in Extra Innings, Stay in First Place
Lansing, Mich.Joe Hudsons two-run single broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 10th inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 5-4 in a hard-fought battle on Thursday night. The win allowed the Dragons to remain in first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
The game was tied 3-3 after nine innings before Daytons Phillip Ervin led off the 10th with a base hit to left field. With one out, Tanner Rahiers infield single moved Ervin to second, and Avain Rachal walked to load the bases. Hudson followed with a ground ball that Lansing third baseman Mitch Nay got a glove on but could not field as it continued on into shallow left field. Both Ervin and Rahier scored on the hit to make it 5-3.
Lansing put the first two runners on base in the bottom of the 10th against Dragons closer Scott Brattvet, but Brattvet got a pair of ground outs and then struck out Dawel Lugo swinging to end the game and earn his seventh save. Joel Bender (1-0) was credited with the win after one and one-third innings of relief.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Sebastian Elizaldes two-run home run. It was his fifth homer of the year. Lansing tied the game in the sixth before the Dragons regained the lead in the eighth on Rachals bases loaded walk. The Lugnuts scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.
Dragons starting pitcher Amir Garrett walked the first batter in the first inning and then retired the next 14 in a row. Lansing did not have a hit until Santiago Nessys infield single with two outs in the fifth.
Elizalde and Sammy Diaz each had two hits for Dayton as part of a nine-hit attack.
The Dragons have won seven of their last 10 games and improved to 23-15 on the year.
The Dragons meet the Lugnuts again on Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Lansing in the second game of the series. Nick Travieso (4-1, 1.59) will start for Dayton against Lansings Tom Robson (2-3, 4.76).
The next Dragons home game at Fifth Third Field is Monday, May 19 against the Great Lakes Loons at 7:00 p.m. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
