Protesters Again Gather at Walmart
BEAVERCREEK -- Nearly 200 people came out for the Justice for John Crawford III Protest and Rally. The rally started with a chant-like song calling for an end to racism and police brutality. Every walk of life stepped in solidarity onto the Walmart parking lot making their voices heard. They were calling for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine to release the surveillance video the night John Crawford was shot and killed by a Beavercreek police officer.
"You walk in Walmart alive and leave out in a body bag. That's not how it should happen," said Attorney Janaya Trotter, with the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the National Action Network. (GCCNAN)
"Historically if John Crawford was doing anything wrong with that gun that video would have been released by now," said Bishop Bobby Hilton, The President of GCCNAN
Protesters say this is not an anti-police rally. It is not about blacks against whites. It's about justice and today they are fighting for change. "This isn't something that's an isolated incident here in Beavercreek. It's happening not just in Ferguson. It's happening in LA. It's happening disproportionally to black males," said Jamie Lee a recent college graduate who attended the rally.
Those at the rally were encouraged that they had the power to bring change. "If we have an Attorney General we can't trust to bring justice, he has no business being the Ohio Attorney General. Lets register to vote and he needs to be voted out," said Bishop Hilton.
Mary Morgan is an activist in her community. While she can't do a lot of marching she tells ABC22/FOX45's Amber Watson, voting is a challenge she's up for. "We have a lot of senior citizens who think this is not their problem particularly if they are white. They think we did this 30 years ago. No we've got to do it again and again. We do not have equal justice in this country and it's hurting us badly," said Morgan.
Bishop Bobby Hilton says at this point they just want answers and they won't stop until the surveillance video is released. They are also calling for the U.S. Justice department to take over the investigation.
BEAVERCREEK -- Protests continued this afternoon at the Walmart store where 22-year-old John Crawford of Fairfield was shot and killed August 5 by a police officer.
Protesters are demanding state Attorney General Mike DeWine release the store surveillance video, which shows the actions of Crawford, the police and the man who called 911 to report the incident. Protesters also want the U.S. Justice department to take over the investigation, which was handed off to DeWine's office from the Greene County Prosecutor.
Today's protest has included signing, people holding signs asking for the killing to stop and a news conference by organizers.
