Man Charged in Business Owner's Murder, Other Arrests Possible
LOCKLAND -- A man police had called a "person of interest" in a business owner's killing was charged with aggravated murder Monday although police could not rule out the possibility that more people would be charged.
Christopher McFerron, 44, appeared in court Monday morning on charges of inducing panic, using a firearm while intoxicated and failing to stop for a police officer. Police said he swallowed heroin and put a gun to his head and led them on a chase Saturday, July 26. By Monday afternoon he was charged with aggravated murder in the death of James Rolman. Police said they could not rule out others being involved in the killing.
"I don't have enough information to say whether he was the shooter or whether someone else was involved. Investigators are still collecting evidence to determine what we actually have," Chief Jim Toles said.
Police said McFerron had been a customer of Rolman's at his recycling business, the David Hirschberg Steel Company. Rolman vanished Friday, July 25, after he withdrew a large amount of cash from U.S. Bank in Lockland. A bank surveillance camera captured an image of a man getting into Rolman's car. Saturday morning, two steel workers found Rolman dead in his car in a silo at the former J and R Trucking Company. McFerron had worked at the company a few years ago.
"How pathetic. How senseless," said Charles Skillman, a Lockland resident who went to high school with James Rolman.
McFerron lived down the street from the recycling business and was familiar with Rolman's routine.
Monday evening, mourners stopped by Rolman's business where flowers and ribbons marked with messages of condolence filled the fence. Dave Rodgers wrote "rest in peace" on a ribbon.
He said he knew McFerron years ago.
"A long time ago we used to ride motorcycles together and everything like that and he was a good guy. I just think he got into some bad stuff. It changed him," Rodgers said. He believed McFerron started using heroin. He said he was surprised to see how old he looked on television.
McFerron does not have a felony criminal record. He will be back in court Tuesday morning.
Anyone with information about James Rolman murder can call Lockland Police or Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
