Most Americans Don't Know CPR in Emergencies

KETTERING -- Would you know what to do if you ever came across someone who was not breathing?

On Saturday, Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputies dove into a pool in full uniform to pull a man to safety. He had no pulse, so they immediately started CPR. Witnesses say watching this ordeal made them want to learn CPR.

We stopped by the Kettering Recreation Complex on Monday where plenty of people were cooling off.

"Doing somersaults and headstands, and swimming and seeing how long I can stay underwater," said a young Madison Marsteller, talking about just some of tricks she can do in the pool.

"She's very good about asking before going in and just having awareness of where they are at all times," said her mother, Kyle Marsteller.

Mom always has eyes on her little girl who knows how to swim, but Kyle is also prepared for anything.

"Worst case scenario, yes if you had to do CPR... and obviously just to check them first: airway, breathing, compressions - basic stuff"

But the basics are not what many Americans know. As many as 70 percent of people may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency, according to the American Heart Association. And 88% of the time, that emergency happens at home, meaning you would likely be saving family members.

Kettering Fire Fighter and EMT Rhys Gast demonstrates the CPR basics for us: 30 chest compressions followed by two breaths into the airway, and repeat.

"What we want people to do is get in there and help. Because you really can't hurt that person the most you can do is help," explained Kettering Fire Department Service Specialist, John Moore.

In an emergency, providing just the basics makes someone two to three times more likely to survive.

"If he's by himself and he's a bystander and doesn't feel comfortable putting his mouth on this patient that he doesn't know, we will ask him to just to chest compressions until we get there," Moore explained.

The Kettering Fire Department puts on two CPR courses a month for $50, and it is $40 if you are a Kettering resident. The American Heart association even provides free videos you can watch online.

For Kyle, she says do not hesitate to learn what you can. "You can do it in two hours in an afternoon and have a basic, life support certification. And it's just enough to buy you time until somebody who's an expert can step in and help; and in an emergency, that's what's important."
