Two Charged Following Hit-and-Run Involving Elderly Man in Kettering
KETTERING -- Two teens now facing charges after a hit-and-run accident in Kettering. The victim 62-year-old Ronald Justice is still being treated at Miami Valley Hospital.
This afternoon we caught up with the wife of Ronald Justice, Donna, as she was heading to the hospital. Her husband is still in intensive care with serious head and neck injuries but she says he's doing better. "Three discs in his back were broken mainly in his neck," said Donna Justice
Kettering police say Ronald was crossing Shroyer Road Thursday evening when a red Pontiac Grand Am hit him and kept driving. Although, the driver did not stop a witness did.
"People at the scene remained with him, great witnesses called 911 to report it right away," said Ron Roberts. The Public Information Officer for Kettering Police.
The victim's wife tells me she was nearby when her husband was hit. "I went to Kroger. He was heading over to Trader Joe's and he said he looked both ways nothing was coming. He was almost to the side walk when it happened."
After dispatch got a description of the car involved in the hit and run an officer saw the car on W. Stroop Road. "They were able to see it saw the fresh damage in the front of the vehicle and made the traffic stop, said Roberts.
The driver 18-year-old Shelby Johnson of Centerville was arrested for felony hit and run and obstructing official business. Her passenger 19-19-year-old Timothy Swayne also from Centerville was arrested for obstructing official business. Kettering police they are still not sure what caused the accident.
Ronald's wife is thanking those witnesses that stayed by her husband and helped police find the driver. "Usually they're not caught when they run away. They usually get away," said Donna. She says she's sorry this happened and she does not have any bad feelings towards the two teens arrested. "I can't really say I'm upset accidents happen. I just wished they would have stopped." she says at this point she is only focused on her husband's recovery. "He's had surgery. He's improving greatly. He's strong, very strong, so hopefully there will be a good outcome.
Justice is expected to make a full recovery. The passenger Timothy Swayne has already bonded out of jail. The driver Shelby Johnson is still in custody. Her bail has not yet been set.
KETTERING -- Police are crediting one of their own for quick work in noticing and arresting two hit-and-run suspects.
Kettering police say a serious injury accident was reported on Thursday in the 4000 block of Shroyer Road. Police say the suspect vehicle, a red Pontiac Grand Am, struck an elderly man and then fled the scene.
An officer spotted the car near West Stroop and Kettering Boulevard with fresh damage on the front of the car, where it struck the man.
The officer stopped the car and identified the driver as Shelby Johnson, 18, of Centerville. She was arrested for felony Hit and Run and Obstructing Official Business. The passenger, Timothy Swayne, 19, of Centerville, was arrested for Obstructing Official Business.
