Secondary Drowning: Rare, but Dangerous for Kids
DAYTON -- Most kids turn into fish in the summer time, with so many days spent at the pool. But there is a little known danger that doctors want parents to be aware of, every time their child gets in the water.
Tuesday was another busy Summer day at the Kettering Recreation Complex pool.
Even with a handful of lifeguards on duty, "they're standing right here in front of me so I can keep an eye on them," said Rashele Flippo, a Mom watching her daughter and brother and sister swim.
"She's pretty good at swimming, she's a really good swimmer," said Flippo who is grateful all those swimming lessons has helped her 8 year old Mckenzie avoid getting into trouble in the water; but other parents haven't been so fortunate..
"A small amount of water, if it gets in the right place, depending on the child, could cause very serious damage," said Dr. Thomas Krzmarzick, Director of Dayton Children's Emergency Services.
It is a little known danger called "secondary drowning." Dr. Krzmarzick says it's rare, but it can happen.
"You pull him out of the water and he seems to be okay after a few minutes, and the real concern there is they may have gotten water into their lungs and even though it's a small amount it may cause some real problems in the next 24 hours or so."
In some cases, the water damages the child's airways which make them shrink, or they could be developing a respiratory distress syndrome - which can be deadly.
So if your child takes on any water at the pool, Dr. Krzmarzick advises, "I'd certainly keep a close eye on my child, if your child has any difficulty breathing whatsoever, has any persistent coughing, or worse gets a little blue around the lips."
Or if they suddenly get tired, get your child in to see a doctor. Rashele Flippo says it is something she'll be not only watching for, but sharing with other parents, too.
"More eyes are better than one."
