Neighbors & Victim's Mother are Calling for Change Two Years After 12 Year old GIrl Hit and Killed
UPDATE: SPRINGFIELD -- Family and friends held a candlelight vigil tonight for Kayla Mongold, on what would have been her 15th birthday.
Kayla was killed two years ago when Joseph Thomson, was trying to outrun police, lost control and hit and killed Kayla who was walking with a friend on Murray Street. Now Kayla's mother is urging the city to install a metal safety guardrail
''And it's sad that it takes something like this to happen for the city to even... to do anything in the first place'', Gloria Mongold told us, ''when they build this street like this it's got a sharp curve they should have automatically put a guardrail up. I'm not saying it would have saved her life but at least it would give them a few more seconds to get out of the way.''
Gloria says her only daughter liked bowling and was looking forward to running track before she was killed. The driver, Thomson, was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
SPRINGFIELD -- Two years after a girl was killed by a speeding driver and now, neighbors are calling for change.
12-year-old Kayla Mongold as killed while walking with a friend along Murray Street in Springfield.
Today would have been Kayla's 15th birthday.
Her family keeps her memory alive with this memorial, and neighbors say they're reminded everyday of the horrific high speed crash that took her life.
We heard this car squealing and he actually was on two wheels. Come around the corner and seen him hit the pole," said Vanessa Foland.
This is dash cam video of the accident that killed 12-year-old Kayla Mongold.
Kayla and a friend were walking along Murray Street in Springfield when Joseph Thomson's SUV slammed into this pole and pinned Kayla under the car.
"It's something you just don't ever forget," said Foland.
Foland has lived on Murray Street for 10 years and says speeding is an issue.
"I mean they just fly and I don't ever see no patrols around," said Foland.
The speed limit is posted at 25 miles per hour, but neighbors say drivers take the curve a lot faster.
"They go 40 to 50 miles, they're just all over the place," said Amy Henslee.
Two years ago, we asked Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody what he thought could be done to help.
We were told the area already sees a lot of patrols, but they would try to do more.
"We'll step up enforcement in that area, but we have a whole city to serve and we have concerns in neighborhoods across this community," said Chief Steve Moody of the Springfield Police Department in June 2012.
Today we stopped by the department to see if they're still patrolling the area, but he wasn't available to talk to us.
But neighbors say they haven't noticed a difference.
"A couple days ago this truck came and almost hit my brother's car, they just go speeding all the time," said Henslee.
With the neighborhood full of kids, and a constant reminder of what can happen, neighbors are asking for a change.
"I would like to see speed traps, I mean speed bumps, if the cops would sit on this corner of Chestnut, you'd be surprised how many speeding tickets they'd be getting," said Foland.
We also spoke with Springfield's Engineering Office to see if anyone has called to get speed bumps put in, but we were told they haven't received any calls.
