Two Local Malls For Sale
DAYTON -- The owner of both major malls in the area wants to sell them.
"I love the mall I've shopped here for about 30 years," said Canne Duez who comes to the Dayton mall "at least once a week."
We showed them the list of malls up on the chopping block.
"It's quite a few malls," she said.
Thirteen malls to be exact, from Florida to California, and two of them are in the Miami Valley.
"Yeah, it makes you kind of wonder," said Beavercreek resident Jeremy Hicks. "You'd like to know a little bit more about it."
We learned Glimcher Realty Trust, the company that owns The Mall at Fairfield Commons and the Dayton Mall, needs to come up with $200 million-$300 million and are selling three or four of their 28 malls until they make that profit.
"It's not uncommon for malls in the industry to be put up for evaluation," said Dave Casper from the Dayton Mall.
"My main concern is safety and cleanliness and maintaining the mall, even if it does change hands," said Duez. "As long as they sell them and continue to improve them and maintain them I don't have a problem with who owns the mall as long as they take care of them and provide good shopping for the people."
"Both Dayton Mall and The Mall at Fairfield Commons are performing very well and continue to attract new, national brands to market. Throughout this process, we are continuing to invest in these centers. We would be happy to continue to own and manage both of them," said a representative from Glimcher in a statement.
"They've done such a nice job building it up the stores are nice and they've done such a nice job recently," said Hicks.
"It's a viable property and that's why people would have interest in buying it," said Casper. "Nothing will change as far as the shopping experience of customers."
Glimcher Realty Trust is looking to reinvest the money they make through the sales back into their business.
