Body Pulled from Ohio River; ID'd as Missing Canoeist
AUGUSTA, KY.-- The body of a Troy man, missing after a canoe trip, has been found.
Searchers pulled the body of 20-year-old Marty Stanaford from the Ohio River in the small Kentucky town south of Cincinnati, 8 miles from where he and friend Cameron Buerger were last seen on Saturday.
"We're all heartbroken and you know everyone is showing lots of love and support towards their families," said Buerger's coworker Jamie Howe.
"It's a real tragedy," said Stanaford's co-worker Austin Reihle, "I mean I loved Marty from the first time I met him. Just good kid to be around."
Stanaford worked at the Steak and Shake Restaurant in Troy. He told coworkers he was excited for the canoe trip.
"He loved being down there. He really did. He loved fishing and all that," Reihle said.
Prior to the location of Stanaford's body Friday, he and Buerger were last seen Saturday about an hour upstream from Cincinnati.
Buerger and the 15-foot green canoe then young men used are still missing.
"The week that Cameron's been gone at work it's hit us hard," Howe added, "Lots of tears."
Howe made dozens of ribbons in Stanaford and Buerger's honor. They are being worn by friends in Troy.
"Just to promote the love for the guys," Howe said, "The support. The color red was chosen because of Troy spirit and obviously red is associated with love."
Search efforts have been turned to the location of Cameron Buerger.
"We're not going to stop going 100 percent forward with this we're going to bring Cameron back," said Troy Thompson of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
"Right now I think everyone's hopes are to get both boys home rather than... we're halfway there," said Howe.
Friends said that a car show already planned for the weekend of May 17th and 18th in Troy will now be held in Cameron Burger's honor, because of his love for cars.
UPDATE -- The body found in the Ohio River has been identified as 19 year old Marty Stanaford .
CINCINNATI -- A body has been found in the Ohio River, about 8 miles downriver from where two canoeists, originally from Troy, had gone missing last weekend.
WKRC in Cincinnati says the coroner was heading to the scene to identify the body.
The search for 19-year-old Marty Stanaford and 20-year-old Cameron Buerger began on Monday. The two men, both from Troy, set out Saturday from Levanna, about an hour upstream from Cincinnati.
Authorities earlier this week said they were traveling in a green, 15-foot canoe. A cooler believed to be one they were carrying has been found at a dam.
