UPDATE: Community Calling for an End to Gun Violence

SPRINGFIELD -- A group of neighbors demand to be heard in their fight against gun violence after a Springfield teen was shot dead on Easter Sunday as he was trying to break up a fight.

As the group walked a mile and a half through a Springfield neighborhood Saturday their numbers doubled in size. A dedicated group calling for the end of gun violence and honoring the lost, which includes Jeffery Wellington, a 17-year-old shot to death while breaking up a fight three weeks ago.

Jeff's mother put on a brave face.

"I just went to Jeff's grave site. It's the first time I've been able to go there," Lakiesha Cole said solemnly Saturday. "It means a lot. It took a lot for me to come today."

Cole wasn't the only broken heart at the picnic.

"My brother Schuyler was murdered nine months ago. Schuyler was shot and gunned down for no apparent reason," Springfield's Hayliegh Mollett explained. "How's the next generation going to be? Do we want to lock our families away and be afraid to do simple chores like go to the store and sit on our porches?"

Family members of five murdered locals were represented Saturday, demanding the community to stop and listen.

The hundred people in attendance turned the darkness into light with dancing, music, food and support.

Earlier coverage:

SPRINGFIELD -- A community bans together to urge their neighbors to 'Stop the Violence'.

More than 50 people gathered to walk the mile and a half journey from Rose park to Davey Moore Park Saturday evening.

The small but dedicated group picked people up along the way. By the time they got to their destination the crowd had doubled.

Included in this group are families who have lost loved ones to gun violence in Springfield and say the Easter Sunday murder of Springfield High junior Jeff Wellington was the last straw.

This event comes on the heels of his suspected murderers arrest in Dayton this week.

"The word needs to be out and the louder, the more the people.  These victims can't speak for themselves. Why don't we stand up and become one. Become a community and call this home again," Springfield's Hayliegh Mollett explained Saturday.

The walk culminated in a cook out in honor of the slain 17 year old Jeffery Wellington. His family were the honored guests.
