UPDATE: Council Approves Centerville Neighborhood Project

CENTERVILLE-- City council's debate over a controversial housing development has ended. Council voted 5-2 in favor of approving plans for a new neighborhood in the area between the Pleasant Hill and Deer Run neighborhoods.

Original plans included connecting Zengel Drive from Far Hills Avenue through to Clyo Road.

Council's vote was to accept the recommendations from planning commission, but with a few conditions.

They voted to change the current configurations planned for Zengel by eliminating the exit to the east side, Deer Run.

Council also wants to see changes in the traffic calming done on Zengel, the use of cul-de-sacs, and a few other specifications to the neighborhood and types of lots.

Neighbors have been voicing their concerns about the neighborhood proposal at council meetings since the issue came up.

"It seems to me the overwhelming evidence is that this is not the right project," said council member Belinda Kenley to the pleasure of many residents attending the meeting. "We know that this area is going to be developed but this might not be the right community for us right now."

"I'm concerned that if we turn this down now that we be looking at something in the future much worse meaning apartments or rentals," said another council member Paul Gresham debating the issue.

Mayor Mark Kingseed is confident council made the right decision taking into account the residents and the developer.

"I know it's silly to say in today's environment to trust us," Kingseed said. "We're very aware that the citizens in the immediate neighborhood did not want this to happen. But we feel the zoning requirements were met and we did not have the proper legal basis to turn it down."

The proposal voted on will go to staff with the city of Centerville. They are expected to report back in three months taking the changes into consideration.

Earlier:

CENTERVILLE -- City Council may vote on the fate of a proposed construction project tonight.

Ryan Homes is proposing to build an 85 home development. The main entrance would be along Alex Bell road, but the developer wants to connect Zengel Drive from the Pleasant Hill neighborhood on Far Hills through to the Deer Run neighborhood on Clyo Road.

Currently both ends of Zengel Drive dead end at a neighborhood park.

"There's three areas of primary concern for the neighbors," said Centerville City Planner Andrew Rodney. "The density of the development is a concern, the connectivity of the streets, is a concern, and then the potential for additional traffic on the streets is a concern."

When council met on this issue April 23rd, public comments lasted until after midnight.

Tonight's meeting is not a public hearing, but the public will have the opportunity to comment after council debates the plans heard at the April 23rd meeting, and after their opportunity to vote on the proposal.

Council chamber doors open at 7pm, the meeting starts at 7:30.
