P&G Set to Bring 800 New Jobs to Ohio
COLUMBUS -- Kendrick Cunningham worked at the old Delphi plant up until 2006.
"That's when they started the downsizing and buyouts," said Cunningham. "But hopefully we will have some businesses come back in here and want to stay here."
Thursday Procter & Gamble announced they will be opening a multi-category distribution center in the city of Union near Dog Leg Road.
Ohio was in competition with several other locations in the United States for the facility, but was chosen because of its ideal location to leverage P&G's scale and new distribution network.
The $89 million project and 1-million-square-foot facility will create 800 new jobs for Ohioans. According to JobsOhio, this new center could be one of the most efficient distribution centers in the world. It is set to open in 2015.
"We are talking about P&G, this is a big deal," said Ohio Governor John Kasich. "I know we were excited about Fuyao and we remain excited. but you think about P&G, they're everywhere: China, India, Korea, they go everywhere."
"The main reason P&G wanted to bring their 800 distribution and plant manufacturing jobs to this region is because of our great location.
"We actually spent a significant amount of time studying the United States and the perfect location for our six distribution centers," said P&G director of customer service and logistics operations for North America Elizabeth Radke. "As we looked at Dayton it really was a great pinpoint to logistically get to a population center in the Midwest and it has a phenomenal transportation infrastructure, both truck and rail which made Dayton a phenomenal choice."
"I think sometimes in the Dayton area there has been a frustration," said Governor Kasich. "Are we going to see the kind of economic growth that we want? And we are beginning to see it."
P&G will outsource the hiring but is looking for people from the Dayton area.
"The roles and skills are going to be typical of distribution operation roles or plant manufacturing roles," said Radke. "That will be the skill-set we are looking for. People that have distribution or manufacturing experience."
"Hopefully I will be one of those 800," said Cunningham. "I've been waiting here for a long time. I'm glad companies are coming in giving us an opportunity to show who you are and what we can do."
P&G officials say this will be one of the most efficient distribution centers in the world. Montgomery County's Job Center will be holding job fair's in the coming months for the open position.
