Pesticides Killing Our Honeybees
MEDWAY -- Their buzzing might scare you, but they are essential to our everyday life, and this past year, 50 to 80 percent of Ohio's honeybees died.
Part of the reason is the harsh winter we had, but now, they're also dying off because of harsh pesticides.
"They got a little honey in here," said Alec Ashbaugh, as he works on his hives.
Honeybees, hard at work in the hive
"That's exactly what we need," he said.
And bringing home the "bacon", or rather pollen.
"We need them for all our fruits and vegetables, in Ohio, melons, apples, grapes," said Ashbaugh.
It's because of the hardworking bees pollinating our fields that we have fresh fruits and vegetables, and without them the cost could go up.
"They would have to figure different ways to pollinate and that would take machines or hand pollination," said Ashbaugh.
The problem, is these busy bees are dying off, killed by pesticides in plants, that you could be putting in your own back yard.
"Those nionics are put in the seedling," he said, "And it's a vascular delivery system that goes, it expresses itself in the pollen and in the nectar and that's when the bees get it."
Nionics for short, weaken the bee's immune system.
And once a bee picks up that pesticide it can bring it back to the hive and infect the rest of its colony.
"They go into fall in a weakened state and then they have trouble over winter, they can't live long enough to over winter and they die out," said Ashbaugh.
You can look for labels on the plants you buy, warning of nionics.
But the scary part is, they're not always properly labeled.
"Even if it is a bee friendly plant it still can be deadly or or cause problems for the bees," said Ashbaugh.
Ashbaugh says the best way to keep the bees alive is to buy local.
