Ohio Legislators Calling for Seat Belts on School Buses

GERMANTOWN -- After two school bus crashes in one day, how safe are your kids when they ride the bus to and from school?

For years, some have argued that buses should be equipped with seat belts.

And according to the most recent statistics from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, there were nearly 17-hundred school bus crashes in 2011.

In 2003, a horrific school bus crash was caught on surveillance video in Circleville, Ohio.

And that video, resonates with parents.

"When the school buses, when they hit a bump, the kids are gonna bounce around just like they are in the car and when they're not secured and they're gonna fall out of their seats and they can get hurt," said Angie Woodward.

The school bus crash in Circleville, also resonated with Ohio State Legislators.

In 2010, they proposed a law requiring seat belts on all school buses but it never made it past committee.

It would have taken effect this year.

The superintendent of Valley View Local Schools doesn't think we need a new law.

"I don't think that's the answer I think the way the buses are built is much, much safer," said Superintendent Bill. Kirby, Valley View Local Schools, "I believe because of the way buses are built those students were much safer today, I don't know if seat belts would have made a difference today."

The National Highway Safety Administration agrees saying, "School bus transportation is one
Of the safest forms of transportation in the United States."

But that's not stopping two Ohio legislators from proposing another bill to require seat belts on school buses.

"For the most part the buses are the safest way to transport but if we can make then safer why shouldn't we?" said State Representative Tom Letson, (D) 64th District.

That's exactly what parents are now asking for from legislators.

"I think that kids should be strapped in, just like we're strapped in in our cars," said Woodward.

A cosponsor of the bill, State Representative Roland Winburn is from the Dayton area.

Rep. Letson says the bill will be similar to what was proposed in 2010.

It has yet to be written and presented to Ohio legislators.
