VA Hospital Shooting Raising Security Concerns

DAYTON -- The VA Medical Center sits just off West Third Street,  but it's much more than just a hospital.

You can see just how large the campus is and that's a lot of ground to keep secure.

Hospital leaders say it took just ten minutes to get the hospital on lockdown.

And while it has armed security officers on campus what it doesn't have is metal detectors, and we wanted to find out why.

"He's discharged at least a revolver at one point," police scanner traffic during incident.

A man walks into the Dayton V.A. Hospital armed with a loaded gun.

Hospital leaders say they got the call five minutes after one shot was fired and they were on campus within 15 minutes.

"From my stand point the response was outstanding, all of our employees handled themselves very, very, very well their training kicked in as well as the training for law enforcement," said Glen Costie, CEO, Dayton V.A.

This isn't the first time a shooting happened on campus.

In March of 2004, a man held a nurse hostage.

An armed officer shot the gunman that incident raised security questions 10 years ago.

"It shouldn't even have escalated to that far, if they would have had someone there screening people like metal detectors like they do at the court buildings it never would have happened," said a man in 2004.

And Monday's incident is raising the same concerns.

"The VA is pretty relaxed"

Gail smith was evacuated during Monday's incident.

"They need metal detectors and they need to take care of their people and patients better," said Gail Smith, VA Hospital patient.

There are no metal detectors in any of the V.A. Hospitals in the Midwest, but the Veterans Affairs' National office tells us having them is  up to each individual hospital.

Metal detectors are always found in the facilities where the veterans sign up for benefits.

"We are open to the public, there are no metal detectors folks in our staff know that if they see suspicious activity they should report it," said Costie.

But for their patients it's a matter of safety and health.

"We got a lot of veterans I'm a veteran myself, 21 years, and I have post traumatic stress and I really had some stress in there," said Smith.

We asked if the Dayton V.A. has ever taken part in active shooter training.

The CEO says he didn't know of any training specifically for that, but says the training they use is in response to shooters on campus.

That training tells them to take shelter and wait for instructions, which is exactly what they did today.
