#YesAllWomen #NotAllMen Trend In Response to Shooting Rampage
DAYTON -- After a shooting rampage on the University of California, Santa Barbara, the discussion has been all about gender equality. Elliot Rodgers killed seven people including himself and injured several others, and according to his pre-released YouTube video, all women are to blame.
"I've wanted a girlfriend, I've wanted sex, love, adoration," he said in the video. "You think I'm unworthy of it. That's a crime that can never be forgiven."
Now the social media world is talking back with the #YesAllWomen, used to touch on issues like harassment and gender relations.
This tweet from @EmilyHuges is one example: "Because every single woman I know has a story about a man feeling entitled to access to her body. Every. Single. One. #YesAllWomen."
"Saying I was rejected therefore that led you to do something means you weren't given something you think you deserve," said Paloma Wiggins who goes to a women's college.
"In response to that we see this on Twitter," said U.D. professor Art Jipson. "What does it mean to be seen in that way or to be judged in that way? Is there such a thing as a too short skirt or to be evaluated on a basis of how much cleavage you might show or what kind of clothing you might wear."
"I think it's good for women to speak out and say, these are things that happen on a large or small scale to them on a daily basis," said Karen Crist of Yellow Springs.
Most men don't agree with Elliot Rodgers.
"I don't think you can objectify everyone," said Patrick Rogers of Dayton. "I don't think all men are like that. I think the majority wouldn't objectify women like that."
Men starting responding online with the #NotAllMen
"I think that's fair, but I think it's also starting to make it about them and that's not the point," said Wiggins.
"We have fathers and brothers and sons and we know they are not all objectifiers and rapists," said Crist. "But don't take it away from the need to have a larger conversation about the objectification about women."
It's been five days since the shootings but the gender debate rages on. The debate that started with one guy who says he felt rejected.
"What does it mean to be rejected? It doesn't mean that your sense of self has suddenly been cast into the toilet and you have to be angry at all men and all women or you have to be angry at this person," said Jipson. "It just means that they were not the right person for you."
