Thousands in Town for Color Guard International Competition

DAYTON -- You may have already noticed, there is an extra 40,000 people in town between this weekend and next.

Right now they are wrapping things up for the Color Guard championships at UD arena. All week long you'll notice people there as well as the Nutter Center and Millett Hall at Miami University.

"We are competing for the first time ever in WGI world-class finals," said Taylor Aves from Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

"This week, Winter Guard International brought in 6,000 students from all over the world.

"We call ourselves the sport of the arts because this takes the athleticism of any Olympic event and it's combined with the pageantry of a Broadway stage," said Winter Guard Sport of the Arts Director of Operations Bart Woodley.

"It's a lot of hard work and injuries," said Aves.

Next weekend is the indoor percussion ensembles. The events bring an extra 40,000 people in town. But don't complain about the traffic because they add $15 million to our economy.

"My God, we love the Dayton Mall, every year we want to go to the mall," said Aves.

"Fifty or 60 more customers per day," said manager of Shish Wraps Simon Abboud. "With the UD Flyers doing well in the tournament and then having the first rounds of the tournament here at Dayton that shows that the atmosphere that Dayton provides is definitely well known throughout the country for us to be able to host the basketball tournament as well as the Winter Guard and Color Guard events."

Even though this is an international event, the Miami Valley is being represented well. Bellbrook High School won the A class championship last year and Saturday morning they placed eighth in the scholastic open class. Miamisburg High School competed in the finals Saturday night.

"It's a big accomplishment that we made it this far," said assistant director of Miamisburg High School Color Guard Jimmy Burciaga. "We are pretty pumped, pretty excited, glad to be back on the floor. It's been a couple year break but we are back."

Dayton will feel this impact for years to come. The city is under contract to will host this event through 2019.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- If the lines were a little longer wherever you went this week it's because of the thousands of people from all over the world who are in town for the Winter Guard International Competition this week and next. They are competing at UD Arena, the Nutter Center and Millett Hall at Miami University.

Six-thousand young kids from all over the world - Canada to the Netherlands - were in Dayton this week competing, and Saturday night is the Color Guard world-class finals championships. The event will continue on through next weekend for the indoor percussion ensembles.

"It's just an incredible influx here within a short period of time with hotels and rental cars and airport and food," said Winter Guard Sport of the Arts Director of Operations Bart Woodley. "They're young kids so they want to go to the mall, the movies. They need practice space to rehearse in. It's a real community effort."

We will feel this impact for years to come. Dayton is under contract to host this event through 2019.
