Orange Barrels Taking Over Ohio's Highways
CLARK COUNTY -- They say there are two seasons in Ohio, winter and construction.
You may have noticed orange barrels popping up all over Ohio's highways.
And if you think winter was bad, this construction season's going to have you shivering too.
But this year, ODOT is doing something they've never done before, and you can expect some big delays.
"They get in the way sometimes," said David Osterman, "Sometimes it's scary because you have to merge and all of that."
Orange barrels are popping up just about every where.
"It's very vital to our economy and to the jobs in Ohio," said David Ley, ODOT, Construction Administration.
It's officially construction season in Ohio, and the Miami Valley is no stranger to the sea of orange.
"They need to go a little bit faster but because it's all over the place, it's not just a little one here or there it's all over the place," said Osterman.
"We're hoping that you'll look at that not as an inconvenience as you drive through these jobs, but an investment in Ohio's future," said Ley.
A future that's costing 2.5 billion dollars, a record breaking amount.
Not to mention more than 100 projects going on at once just in the Miami Valley.
"We can't allow our transportation system to slip behind and lose the competitive edge," said Ley.
An edge that's providing a third lane on I-70 in Clark County between Enon Road and U.S. 68.
"It's kind of nice knowing that it's going to be fixed and it'll be better to get across later on," said Osterman.
But until those barrels disappear, expect some delays. And who could forget the work on I-75 in Downtown Dayton? It's moving on to its second phase this year, but won't be finished until 2017.
So for drivers, some advice to avoid those dreaded orange barrels:
"Slow down a little bit because it's real easy to get into a car accident I've seen a lot of them lately so just slow down," said Osterman.
Construction has already started in Clark County. It's expected to be finished in October of 2015.
