SWAT Carries Person Out of Home Near Hodapp and Tacoma
DAYTON -- A Dayton man is dead and his wife in critical condition after what police are calling an attempted murder-suicide. It happened on Dayton's east side at the intersection of Hodapp Avenue and Tacoma Street.
Police detectives left the area around 4 p.m. Police had been on seen since 10 a.m. Saturday when they got the initial tip, that the woman living here may be in danger.
When they knocked, they didn't get an answer.
"Then they heard three distinct shots," Dayton Police Assistant Chief Bob Chabali said. "Two simultaneous almost and then one a few seconds later."
"I got a call from the police and they asked me some questions," said Michael Caldwell who lives next door. "Less than a minute later I went inside and I heard the two shots followed by the last one."
Police immediately called in a SWAT team.
"I got up around 10:30 and they were already out here," said neighbor Stacy Conley who has lived there since 2001.
Neighbors were asked to evacuate as police waited for the shooter to come out.
"They had everything blocked off down here and the cops were swarming their house. Both sides and just yelling, 'Come out, we have the house surrounded'," said neighbor Therese Overman. "They were actually telling all the neighbors that came out on the porch to get in. It was a dangerous situation, guns were being fired, police were saying they were going to start the tear gas process."
Eventually, SWAT went in and found the husband, Dustin Leonard, dead and his wife injured.
"He shot at her more than once," said Chabali. "We don't how many times she was struck. The doctors are tending to her now and we know that he self-inflicted at least one gunshot wound."
Through our investigations, we learned the woman had a temporary protection order against Leonard after a domestic violence incident on March 22. He reportedly violated that protection order last week.
"She actually told me to watch out for him," said Caldwell. "We knew they had some issues but like every other couple you hope they would work it out. We didn't see this coming. Wow."
"Unfortunately, this was so emotional that you saw the results of what happened today. Just very, very emotional, lots of issues that goes on through one's mind," said Chabali.
As for this neighborhood, the neighbors had to go through a SWAT standoff last summer.
"I've been through this before," said Conley.
Police tell us the woman has two children from a previous relationship, but no one else was in the home. Police did recover the pistol and are speaking with neighbors for the ongoing investigation.
