Don't Let Your Online Profile Hurt Your Work Profile

DAYTON -- Jacob Bowling may not have a job, but he's working hard to find one.

"I've applied to probably at least 10 and I'm going to apply to three more today," he said.

For many people that hard work can be negated by what's online.

W.S.U. Department of Communication chair Dr. Melissa Spirek says the biggest mistake people make on social media is "Not taking the perspective of others when looking at who they are." She says, "Be aware of both indirect and direct implications. This is your baseball card. This is what speaks for you when you're not there and I think people forget that."

"They don't want somebody that as soon as they get off work will go drink all their money off and then come into work late," said Bowling.

Even if you're not posting overtly embarrassing photos online, you can still harm your career if you're perceived as "partying" more than working.

"Not only partying but even engaging in risky behavior," said Spirek. "So if your hobby is skydiving or racing then those are potential cost to an employer in terms of insurance."

Another big mistake, since most content is time-stamped, your current or future employer can easily see if you regularly post during work hours.

"That's true," said Bowling. "They probably do use that."

"Now employers are paying for third parties to do content analysis of Facebook pages across the years to look at past behaviors as a predictor for future behavior," said Spirek.

Also, did you know using Google Images, an employer can upload your LinkedIn headshot and see all other websites where you've also used that photo?

"I didn't know they could get into all of your different pages off of one that's crazy for real," said Bowling.

"Even if you think you are being protected by using nicknames and other pseudonyms that Facebook page is found as well," said Spirek.

Lastly first impressions are huge.  Because most employers now Google job candidates, if the first few search results for your name aren't the most flattering, you've got to create new content (such as a personal branded website) to replace those results.

Spirek recommends you do a search for your name and see what first impression you give your employer.

"What are the other Facebook pages that you are liking," said Spirek. "Our government officials are finding that if they share a joke, the sharing is a reflection of them as well. Assume that not only your worst enemy is seeing it terms of who you are competing against, also assume that even though you have it listed as private that your Facebook page is indeed public."

"I don't want to be judged off of one picture," said Bowling. "I'd rather have you see me face-to-face to see how I really am." "You know what you mean when you post something on Facebook, but that's not necessarily how the receiver will view it. So have friends or somebody review your page," said Spirek. "Look at my Facebook page and rip it to shreds."
