Spanx Or No Spanx?: The Health Issues Caused By Too Tight Shapewear
DAYTON -- Spanx. Celebrities love 'em, some hate 'em and even supermodels admit to wearing them.
Millions of women around the world wear them to create a thinner shape but one local doctor says your secret slimdown could be damaging your inner health.
Springboro mom of three, Tricia Meredith, started wearing Spanx to get her pre-baby body back.
"I didn't want people to really see that my baby weight was still there and even with exercise, had some extra skin that wasn't going away," says Meredith.
Meredith has three pairs of Spanx she relies on for special events; a tank top, shorts and tights. She never wears all three at the same time and usually can only last three to four hours in a pair.
"When I take them off, I'm like, 'aahhhhh, wow, that's different', feel so much better at times too," says Meredith.
The 'ahhh' feeling is also relief for her internal organs and digestive system.
Dr. Rajkamal Jit with Digestive Specialists, Inc. says extra tight shapewear puts too much pressure on the body.
"They compress the stomach and so the stomach acid goes up into the food pipe, the esophagus, much more than usual, and that causes acid reflux, more damage to the lining of the esophagus," says Dr. Jit.
Dr. Jit says he's seen an increase in the number of female patients with health problems from shapewear and may are unaware the 21st Century corset is to blame. Some other serious side effects are heartburn, bloating, abdominal pain, incontinence, constipation, poor circulation, blood clots and even shallow breath.
"When you have tight Spanx or shapewear in place, it is compressing the abdomen and it is not letting the diaphram come down with respirations, so that can cause lung issues," says Dr. Jit.
"I can totally understand the compression aspect, yeah, can totally feel that because it is, it's extremely tight, when I take them off I can totally feel my body letting go, so, some are shocking, the incontinence issue I'm kinda shocked with," says Meredith.
So whether you love 'em or hate 'em, slimdown shapewear is not going anywhere and it's up to you to say Spanx, or no Spanx.
We reached out to Spanx, Inc. to comment on this story and the associated health issues but have not heard back.
