Ohio Troopers Top List of Best Dressed Departments for 2014
DAYTON -- If you have ever been pulled over by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, your focus is no doubt on how much you are about to pony up. You have probably never really noticed how dapper the trooper is dressed.
"We are issued mace, I just don't have enough room to put it. Handcuffs, side arm," said Sgt. Chris Colbert, a trooper with the Dayton post.
Even with all the gear, after 24 years, Colbert can dress quickly.
"The uniform really hasn't changed much since the 50's."
He has four long sleeved versions, 4 short sleeved, and the dress uniform.
"We've been using the same basic tie clasp since the beginning of time with the chain."
The state pays for each trooper's uniforms, and for the dry cleaning. It's not cheap, though the state couldn't get us an exact figure.
"Obviously uniform appearance is a big deal with the highway patrol. It always has and it always will be."
The appearance has paid off. The Patrol won best dressed for agencies with more than 2,000 people -- named by the North American Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors.
"Your uniform's neat and pressed, and it looks good and you're in decent physical shape... you start to automatically get some command presence just from being there. You get a little bit of automatic respect. Obviously that's not always the case but it does help."
"I guess I feel like I've never seen a sloppy officer or trooper," said Anna Daigle who says it is nice that "they look professional, put together, in control and eligible, all that good stuff."
"The way they dress is just professional, for who they are and what they're doing. And you know, you just have to look good," said Jerome Bush of Dayton.
The look won't be changing anytime soon, so they'll probably win again.
"It's a profession. And to be professional, you have to look the part as well as to do it," said Sgt. Colbert.
